Surface Images of Satellite #3

On display beginning April 6th at The Gallery Project

Statement:

To say whether an object is alive depends on your perspective. Our everyday perspective is full of things that are easy to label as living, but a new perspective offered by steady extension of the range of our senses present far more challenging scenarios where we must discriminate between what is animate and what is merely mechanical.

One of the greatest challenges to our perspective comes from simply adjusting the scale with which we observe the world. Close examination of the human body indicates that we are teeming with life at the micro-scale. An individual is a colony of macrophages, lipocytes, neurons and others. Each cell seems more alive than purely mechanical. After all, a cell swimming around in a lake is enough to be called an organism. Why not the same title for those swimming around your body? Or have they lost part of what makes them alive for the sake of cooperation with other cells?

As the range of our senses steadily expands we may meet new challenges to our definition of life. My piece Surface Images of Satellite #3 intends to raise such questions.

Just wanted to say thanks to those who joined me at the opening on Friday.

Sadly, I didn't win any awards, but I'm not to down about this. There was a lot of really good work there from well established Michigan artists. It would be tough to have to pick a just a few of the 70 or so pieces to be best in show. I learned that they received about 200 entries, so I'm still pretty happy about getting both of my submissions accepted. Thats a tougher acceptance rate than U of M!

So, if you didn't get a chance to stop by last Friday, the show will be up until the end of September. Check it out next time you are "downtown".

This is video is an exploration of an analogy about the molecular landscape of the human body.

Our body is made largely of protein, complex molecular machines that begin as a simple linked chain. they take their final structure by wrapping up upon themselves in order to release a kind of tension or energy stored in hundreds of small electrical charges.

In this video I add tension to a thin cotton rope by twisting from one end. with enough tension higher order structures form spontaneously. the shape and movement of the rope has a remarkably organic and sinister quality.
